Photos By Blind Teenagers

Photographer Tony Deifell teaches blind teenagers the art of photography and has compiled a book, entitled Seeing Beyond Sight, of their works. It is a very interesting idea, giving something to teenagers they thought they could never have.

Unusual as the idea may seem at first, putting cameras in the hands of visually impaired children proved to be extremely fruitful — both for the photographers, who found an astonishing new means of self-expression, and for the viewers of their images, for whom this is an entirely new kind of dreamlike and intuitive creation. Even before you know that these pictures were taken by blind teenagers, they are striking in their use of light and composition, and haunting in their chiaroscuro intensity.

Accompanying the images are the students’ own words and captions — in which we see how much the taking of pictures came to mean to them and how the creative process works in ways rarely experienced. This is a volume that speaks with rare inspirational power.

You can take look inside the book or browse some of the videos, interviews with the photographers.

Bush Family Ties to Nazis and Attempted Fascist U.S. Coup

It was the Guardian.co.uk that took notice of the Bush Family ties to Nazi Germany,
How Bush’s grandfather helped Hitler’s rise to power, Prescott Bush, George W. Bush’s grandfather, who’s companies profited from this regime, but more turned up upon investigation at the Library of Congress.

BBC Radio 4 investigates an attempted fascist coup.

The coup was aimed at toppling President Franklin D Roosevelt with the help of half-a-million war veterans. The plotters, who were alleged to involve some of the most famous families in America, (owners of Heinz, Birds Eye, Goodtea, Maxwell Hse & George Bush’s Grandfather, Prescott) believed that their country should adopt the policies of Hitler and Mussolini to beat the great depression. - http://www.bbc.co.uk/

Recycled Clothing Made from Old Letters, Envelopes, Newspaper and other Found Objects

pattern packet dress Wait… Don’t throw out that old newspaper. It can be used to make a dress. Artist Jennifer Collier creates apparel items from old paper such as old letters, newspaper etc.

She has some really cool stuff that the ladies will definitely want to checkout.

The works have the power to communicate ideas about recycling, as well as themes exploring the body. My work is often inspired by literature. The work is non-functional and aims to encourage people to speculate on the nature of value. I enjoy the idea of working with disposable organic materials that are transient in nature, imbuing them with worth and creating something intriguing and of great beauty.

Why are we Shy?

Great article entitled Why we are shy? over at TimeOnline.co.uk discussing why some children are more prone to being shy than others.

They found that Israeli children are the most confident, they can easily be among a crowd of strangers with no issues of stress or awkwardness. Japanese and Taiwanese kids, however, it is the exact opposite.

Shyness is thought to affect up to 50 per cent of adults to some degree, and is defined by the Encyclopedia of Mental Health as “discomfort and/or inhibition in interpersonal situations . . . It is a form of excessive self-focus.” Being introverted is not the same as being shy. Introverts are not scared by the prospect of socializing, but prefer being on their own.

But shyness is not a clear-cut case of genetic determinism. Numerous studies show that tending budding wallflowers in the right way can lead them to turn towards the sun and blossom. Inhibited youngsters are much less likely to turn into anxious adults if they are brought up by confident parents than by anxious ones.

Near the end of Dr Tanya Byron’s article, she lays out 10 steps to overcoming shyness via the Shyness Research Institute.

Fried Mouse Found in a Bag of Chips

Frito-Lay Inc. has been accused of frying a mouse which then ended up in a Montana man’s bag of chips. 66 year old Jack Hines noticed the fried delicacy (heh, I’m sure it is somewhere) as he was about to eat it.

“Good thing I seen it. I got it all the way up to my mouth,” he said. “I felt the fur, I brought it back down and just looked at it and threw it behind my back.” - Jack Hines. AP.org

Would you fry up this little guy?
