DB Fletcher Capstan Ilona expanding table

This is too cool… We are all used to square and rectangular dinner tables that can easily be expanded to accommodate more guests, but I have never seen a circular one until now. Very clever!

The table made by DB Fletcher and can be found on their website at http://www.dbfletcher.com/capstan/

ShotCodes - Links for The Real World

shotcode logo

ShotCode wants to bring the idea of web links to the real world.

It’s pretty interesting… Imagine you a concert poster while walking down the street, your favorite band is playing next week! Usually you’d have to remember to order tickets when you got home, but if that poster has a ShotCode on it, a little cog like image that acts like a real world link, you can use your mobile phone to take a photo of it (image below) and order tickets right there.

shotcode example

But what is wrong with URLs?
The ShotCodes seem to act more like AOL keywords than traditional hyperlinks, so presumabily they would be very good for presenting very specific data for a given link, like the ability to buy concert tickets.

This is a service that I could easily imagine being very usful for an array of scenarios from city and museum tours to ordering event tickets. The largest barrier is educating the public on this service, you could easily walk past a cog-link any never know it.

The Rinpa Eshidan - Live Painting - Puzzle

Live painting is amazing enough to watch all day long.

The Rinpa Eshidan is a Japanese art group that does live paintings, but their take is not on the final piece:

Instead of focusing on the finished project, we believe the process of creation itself is where art comes to life and our videos aim to engage our audience in that process. - rinpaeshidan.jp

I Miss Cassette Tapes

I really miss blank cassette tapes. Sitting all night in glued to my stereo, mixing tapes, mashing songs together, pause-rwd-stop-rec. These early theft tools did not steal any of the history attached to music like the digital medium has. I really miss passing tapes wound with friends, talking about the music we recorded. The funny thing is that music is actually kind of hard to share with your friends now simply because there really isn’t a need to, you can sample or buy/steal virtually any song in the world.

I’m losing focus of why I started this post, sparked by the article Cassette Tape Culture. They have pictures of one of my favorite toys from when I was a kid… Cassette tape Transformers. I had a few of these and I completely forgot about them until I came across this post.

Trunki - Luggage For Little People

trunki A great story and an even better product, Trunki is ridable luggage for kids. These dinosaur looking cases are designed by Rob Law, a Dragons’ Den reject. What’s Dragons’ Den? It’s a UK television show where inventors get to present their invention to potential investors. Law’s invention was not well received, to say the least, by the judges. Here is what one had to say about him after he introduced his Trunki:

And the notoriously brusque tele-communications tycoon Peter Jones declared: “I meet people like you all the time - you think you have something. I tell you, you don’t.” - DailyMail

This guy must have been high, of course these inventor shows are complete rubbish anyway, highlighting the panel of “experts” over the inventors.

Anyone who has ever spent any amount of time in an airport notices kids who are tired after a flight with nowhere to sit and rest… Hell you could make one for adults, I’d ride that thing around!

They are not available in the U.S. yet, but you can pre-order them: Trunki US Site.

Ground Lamb Pita Pizza [Recipe]

ground lamb pita pizza

I had some leftover ground lamb from my dinner last night, spaghetti with ground lamb bolognese sauce, so I decided to put it to some good use, Ground Lamb Pita Pizza!

It might sound strange, Ground Lamb? On a pizza? But yes, it is fantastic! Lamb has such a distinct, almost sweet flavor, it is a neglected meat in this country. So here we go, my recipe for Ground Lamb Pita Pizza.

Ingredients List (Makes 4 Pita Pizzas)

  1. 1 Lb. Ground Lamb
  2. 24 Ounces of Tomato Sauce (ahem… You make you own, right?)
  3. 4 Pitas
  4. 3 to 4 Cups Fresh Mozzarella Cheese
  5. 2 Table spoons Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  6. Fresh Basil

Cooking Directions

  1. Pre-heat your oven to 425 Degrees F
  2. Brown the ground lamb in a large skillet, copping it up with a spatchula.
  3. While the lamb is browning, heat up you sauce in a medium sauce pan, stirring every few minutes.
  4. Take your pitas and lightly coat the bottoms with some extra virgin olive oil and arrange them on a baking sheet.
  5. Once the lamb is done browning, with a large kitchen spoon, transfer the meat into your tomato sauce, mix it up and let simmer for about 3 1/2 minutes. (Ideally you will want to then let your sauce cool and be placed in the refrigerator overnight, but lets have a it)
  6. With a brush, dab some extra virgin olive oil around the edges of each pita. This will give it that nice golden crust.
  7. Spoon some of your lamb sauce, sprinkle some mozzarella cheese over each of the pitas.
  8. Throw it into the oven and about 15 minutes later, or until the cheese looks to your liking, pull it out and let it rest for another 10 minutes. (I didn’t have any basil myself, but at this point your could lay some on top of your pizza.
  9. Now just cut it up and put it in your mouth! Enjoy!

Next time I think I will try some toppings on mine… Maybe some green peppers and kalamata olives!

Encrypting GMail

gmail logo I believe this was discussed on the latest TWiT, well it was one of Leo Laporte’s shows. GMail, as with all Google services, such as Google Reader, does not encrypt your session while using the service.

What this means
This means that when you are reading your email via http://mail.google.com your data can potentially be viewed by someone else. While they do not have the ability to change account settings, such as passwords, there is the possibility that they could read your emails.

A dead simple fix
Instead of going to http://mail.google.com to read your emails, go to https://mail.google.com.

Notice the extra s in https://? This will run an encrypted connection between your PC and Google’s server, instead of passing the data back and forth in plain text.

FeelImage.net - Find Photos Based on Your Mood

FeelImage.net is a new site that discovers Flickr photos based on your mood. Simply type in your mood and it will grab a slew of photos from flickr.com based on what you entered.

feelimage.net

I believe what makes this site different from simply searching on flickr’s site is that it actually looks at a photos color and maybe its hue(?). It then attempts to determine a good pairing between photos and the mood you are searching.

That said, since it is a color discovery tool, you can search for things like “green car“, and a list of green car photos will be found. If you click the green car link you will see that not only green cars are found, but also cars that are among a good deal of green, such as in a grassy field.
