Ulrika Erdes’ Public Embroidery - Intimate Graffiti

ulrika erdes public embroidery
ulrika erdes public embroidery closeup

Ulrika Erdes, a Swedish “artist in the making”, has a little bit of fun while on the bus or train. She makes cross stitching graffiti on the seats of buses and trains, Public Embroidery (how about Stiffiti, Stitchitti or Stitchffiti?).

This is such and interesting and fun idea, what a way to pass the time as you’re taking the train. It is a really interesting twist on graffiti, a rather intimate way of tagging the world. It must be great to happen upon her work, wonder who made it and under what circumstances. Very interesting.

Erdes also has some Cross-Stitch Patterns you can print out to then go out and make your own.

Karolina Sobecka - Wildlife Project

WILDLIFE PROJECT tiger

Artist(?) Karolina Sobecka’s WildLife Project, an installation piece, uses a projector to shine images of a running tiger out the window of a moving car on to the walls of passing buildings. What makes the piece most interesting is that with a little sensor she places on the cars wheel, the tiger actually appears to run along side the car, mirroring its movement.

Using a sensor on the car, the tiger’s speed corresponds to the speed of the car. As the car moves, the tiger runs along it speeding up and slowing down with the car; as the car stops, the tiger stops also. A proximity sensor also adds other animated animals when the car is approached.

It’s an hypnotic video to watch, reminds me very much of the artists who projected slide photos of war-torn cities against modern buildings. Different idea, but similar in their approach. Unfortunately I do not remember the artists name.

Sobecka’s piece plays on the ideas of man vs. animal, urban jungles and natures place within it. And how in-sync we can be or dependent we may be on each other, man and animal. I watched the video at least six times over and over (link to video below), it is quite mesmerizing. I just wish there was sound to it, the noises from the traffic, revving engines and break pads screeching.

Bleach a Koi Fish onto Your T-Shirt

bleached koi t-shirt

I remember once when I was young when I was doing my own laundry for the first time I put some bleach in, thinking “this’ll do it”. Yeah… I completely ruined some of my favorite t-shirts.

Well, Phelyx Hopkins, an artist living in Denver, has a really cool tutorial on how to use bleach in your favor, to make a really fantastic Koi Fish imprint onto a black t-shirt.

The Rinpa Eshidan - Live Painting - Puzzle

Live painting is amazing enough to watch all day long.

The Rinpa Eshidan is a Japanese art group that does live paintings, but their take is not on the final piece:

Instead of focusing on the finished project, we believe the process of creation itself is where art comes to life and our videos aim to engage our audience in that process. - rinpaeshidan.jp

Sand Art

This is an old video of a sand artist, but I think is so fantastic so I am posting it here. Huh? Sand artist? Yes. This artist uses a light box, throws sand on top and makes some amazing landscapes and portraits, on the fly.

Packing Tape Installations

baby packing tape installation Mark Jenkins has brilliantly fun and creepy Packing Take Installations (Storker Project), human forms and objects made from packing tape placed in “everyday” situations.

Not all of the installations are made using packing tape, some of my favorites are his “outside” items. Some are creepy some are fun, but all are very interesting playing on this idea of discomfort.

One of his pieces is of a packing tape body lying in a dumpster, a photo of this installation is taken from high above, off the side of a roof that has a very unsettling feeling to it.

Phil Hansen

Yahoo has a really nice piece on Phil Hansen as part of their People of the Web series entitled Strokes of Genius. The Yahoo piece includes a video that was really interesting. I wrote about Phil Hansen not too long ago, he painted a portrait of Kim Jong Il in his own blood and judo chopped a painting of Bruce Lee.

Phil has done some amazingly interesting work, paintings that he presents in a time lapsed video posted online. He uses a style of pointillism he calls “kinetic fragmentism”, pointillism in motion, and primarily explores highly political issues.
