Slowly Introducing Breakfast Foods
I used to despise breakfast foods. Eggs, bacon, pancakes, waffles and especially sausage. The smell was vomit inducing to me. When I was a kid my dad would take us to Denny’s or some other greasy spoon and I would be the only who would order from the lunch menu… salads, hamburgers, hot dogs, anything that was not associated with breakfast foods. But I’ve started to come around.
It was in High School when I really became interested in health and exercise, lifting weights, that I began to eat egg whites. They disgusted me, but I was determined to scarf down as many grams of protein I could and eggs were a really easy way to do this. Egg whites were really the only thing I could eat because of the low levels of flavor and smell.
Jump forward a few years to the year 2000, my first omelet. It was in Gallup, New Mexico at a little dinner. I was 22 and decided that I would have another go, I ordered a Denver omelet. The waitress look and me baffled, then cocked eyed when I asked her “what’s a Denver Omelet?”. She just honestly laughed as she ran down the list on ingredients. What the hell did I know. But man, I loved it! Sure, I doused it in hot sauce and asked for extra cheese, hoping it would mask the egg yolk flavor.
Let me just get on with it
Not to drag on too much, you get the idea… I slowly began to enjoy breakfast foods and soon found waffles which are one of my favorite treats in the world to eat. And what I really learned in this drawn out affair is that I was really limiting my experiences by completely ignoring something I really new little about. There are so many amazing things that can be made with breakfast foods like Eggs Benedict and beans and toast (ok this one is a bit of a cheat).
I am still slowly introducing other breakfast foods into my diet for the simple reason of seeing what is out there. Up next… Sausage.
